Gingers and Relatives

Ginger lilies (Hedychium) are striking, rhizomatous perennials prized for their lush, tropical foliage and highly fragrant, exotic flowers. Native to Asia, they produce tall, leafy stems topped in late summer and autumn with showy, spire-like blooms in shades of white, yellow, orange, or red. Many varieties release a powerful, sweet perfume, particularly in the evening, making them ideal for planting near patios or pathways.

Fast-growing and bold in appearance, ginger lilies create an instant jungle-like effect in borders or large containers. They thrive in fertile, moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. In milder regions they can be grown outdoors year-round with winter protection, while in colder areas they are best lifted or grown in containers and overwintered frost-free.
