A large, fast-growing shrub with soft branches, large velvety leaves, and long, scentless trumpet-shaped flowers. Native to high-altitude regions of the Andes at elevations of 2,000–3,000 m (6,600–9,800 ft.) from Colombia to Bolivia, it is a popular ornamental that adapts well to a range of warm-temperate climates. This particular form, collected from cloud forest at around 3,100 m in Nariño, Colombia, produces striking vermilion-coloured flowers.
